I welcome aboard our new US correspondent, Tom Murray, to the show this week, bringing is three music tips from his homeland and hopefully contributing exciting material on a monthly basis. I welcome the estimable Arthur Brown onto the show this week as he embarks on a tour to celebrate 45 years of 'Fire', a huge hit in 1968 that continues to burn brightly today. I've included three tracks from his debut album throughout this week's show which should hopefully wet your appetite for further forays into his work. We talked for such a long time that there were some great stories that I had to disense with, so maybe I'll transcribe the whole thing so you can catch up on the rest of our chat. A lot to cram into this week's two hours, including an exclusive reggae & dub guest mix from top DJ & producer, Sleepy Time Ghost. Unit 137 is a loose colllective of artists exploring the outer reaches of bass culture & Sleepy Time Ghost is one of the rising stars of this London based group. PLAYLIST 01.03.13
The new solo album by This Morning Jacket frontman, Jim James, is a transcendental masterpiece. It offers a pure, crystalline experience that makes me want to don an old sackcloth and go live in the mountains. It just touches that part of the brain that registers a sublime set of tunes and delivers a spiritual questioning a bit like Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On'. It deserves to be listened to in its entirety and I'd gladly play the whole thing if broadcast rules allowed me to. Whilst your rummaging for that sack cloth and searching for a silent retreat listen out for BLESSA too. They're from Sheffield, sound like a cross between early Lush and The Cocteau Twins and seem set to make an impact if they continue to impress live audiences like the one I was part of earlier this week. I also welcome back our Nordic correspondent, Carmel McNamara, for three more musical tips from the north countries - another perfect selection from our roving tune hunter.
